What is Affordable Housing?
Affordable Housing is defined as housing that costs no more than 30% of a family’s gross monthly income. Costs for mortgage, utility, taxes, interest and insurance should be no more than 33%-38% of gross monthly income for home ownership to be considered affordable.
Housing Solutions for the Southwest
Provides rental and utility assistance, subsidized housing for homeless families, and other resources including counseling on budgeting, nutrition, parenting, transitional housing, and weatherization.
Durango Community Shelter (Volunteers of America)
Provides shelter for up to two weeks for individuals with no other place to go, and a 30-day transitional housing program for residents who are employed.
Durango Housing Corporation
Apartments are available with 1, 2, 3, or 4 bedrooms. There is a wait list for up to 4 years for 1 bedroom. Bedrooms are available for people with disabilities. Location of apartments is close to schools and convenient to transportaion. Rent is based on income.
Merced de Las Animas
Section 8 Accepted. Target populaiton earning between 40%-60% of area median income. 50 town homes with 1, 2, or 3 bedroom units with garages available.
Valle de Merced
Section 8 accepted. Target population earning between 30%-60% of area median income. 46 apartments with covered parking. Housing availability is income based. Housing is near Fort Lewis College and close to a bus stop.
Family Crisis Center/ Farmington

Must be in a current domestic violence situation. Stay is 30-90 days and availability is first come, first serve. Older boys not accepted.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is a self-help program that provides affordable home ownership opportunities through a partnership program. Providing a stable, long-term home environment, pride of ownership, and the chance to learn new skills and make new friends along the way, the Habitat Home Ownership Program offers a life-changing opportunity that results in a very positive and beneficial experience for Partner Families. Habitat also operates a store where you can find recycled building materials and home furnishings.

Housing available one time only with cost of $100 or less emergency assistance (church members only). Availability is limited and housing must be approved by two clergy members within the church.

Emergency lodging with a limit of 2 nights in a hotel room.
