The Women’s Resource Center plays the following roles in the road to opportunity. To ensure our continued success, we need your help:
Our Resource and Referral program continues to be the core of our existence. For 26 years we have been “the place to go when you don’t know where to go.” With your support, we will continue to empower women like our friend Leah who has broken her cycle of poverty and become a self-sufficient, contributing member of her community. Please read Leah’s Letter It is worth the time.
To date, we have assisted 329 women through our coaching, legal and small business assistance programming-a five percent increase from last year. Your contributions will allow us to continue to offer low cost assistance with divorce and custody paperwork. It will also be invested into our coaching program, which provides one on one support and aides in positive decision-making and building economic self-sufficiency skills.
Each March we partner with local businesses and community organizations to bring Women’s History Month activities to La Plata County. These activities raise awareness about women’s issues and promote positive change. One hundred and thirty women attended our Extraordinary Women luncheon, honoring Enid Brodsky for the 2013 Extraordinary Woman Award. Additionally, over 300 women attended the March workshops.
We know that greater education fosters self-sufficiency. So far, 26 women have received scholarships for higher education through our Educational Opportunity programming. This is a 73 percent increase over last year due to amazing community support. Furthermore, our educational programming for girls has expanded to serve 5th graders. Because of support like yours, we were able to introduce “Get Your Girl Power” aimed at helping 5th graders transition into middle school. We served 30 elementary school girls this past February.
In addition, our “Girls to Women, Women to Girls” program continues to grow by supporting all 8th grade girls in La Plata County. During our 13th year, the program partnered with the 9-R school district and was recognized for satisfying Colorado state health standards.
Once again, we thank you for your continued support of the Women’s Resource Center and thank you in advance for helping us reach our year-end goal. Let us work together and invest in the future of our community’s women and girls.
When you support the Women’s Resource Center, you’re Empowering Women and Changing Lives by providing an open door, five days a week, to a safe, supportive environment, where women come to find the resources they need to take care of themselves and their families. Women don’t need an appointment, nor do they need to qualify for our services. Any woman can walk in our door to find the help she needs to become economically self-sufficient.
