Art and Soul Day Retreat
The Place to Bring Your Self Into Balance
Mission Statement:
We are a community retreat center providing daily opportunities
for self fulfillment through art, music, dance, laughter, quiet
reflection and other forms of self expression that nourish each
individual, thus enriching the community as a whole.
Our intention is to provide a “drop in” retreat center where an individual could take time out from their daily routine to engage in whatever activity feels most nurturing to them on that particular day. From the moment one enters through the main foyer, and is greeted by the soothing sound of a water fountain, attractive plants and a friendly greeter it becomes readily apparent that this is a place to nourish one’s soul. To that end we would offer the following options:
-
The Dance Depot–a room with a great sound system that could be used for dance, yoga, tai chi , drumming or any activity where freedom of movement is required.
-
The Creation Station- This is a space to engage in those art projects that you just don’t have time or space for at home.
-
The Quiet Place-This space is made available for quiet activities such as reading, meditation, quiet contemplation or listening to music or book tapes on headphones.
-
The Laugh Lair-Laughter is good for body and soul. Here there is a TV with a variety of comedies to tickle your funny bone. Laughter yoga will also be offered.
-
Tea and Talk Kitchen-This is just as the name implies-a place to share a cup of tea and quiet conversation.
-
Growing Garden-This would be a large community garden where those whose souls are fed by digging in the dirt can till the soil, plant, weed, water and harvest our crops.
-
On the Grounds of the Center there will be a meditation garden and a labyrinth, along with benches placed throughout so that time can be spent in nature. There will be flowers to be planted and maintained by those who are nourished in this way.
-
Kid’s Korner-Daycare will be provided on site for some of the hours of operation.

WRC partner agency Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County (HFHLPC) invites you volunteer to become a partner family mentor! HFHLPC is not just about building homes, but helping to build lives too. HFHLPC is the ONLY agency in La Plata County whose mission is to provide affordable homeownership opportunities to La Plata family residents earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income. These families do not qualify for conventional mortgages and are typically directed towards affordable rental situations. We believe that homeownership is superior to renting, is a vital step in breaking the cycle of poverty, and contributes to pride in families and communities.
The only way HFHLPC can carry on its mission is through community partnerships and generosity of hundreds of individuals that recognize the importance of homeownership for families earning a bit less. Families are assigned a mentor to help them through the process of building and buying their home through Habitat’s self-help program. Oftentimes, families are single-parent households with little knowledge of what building, buying and owning a home involve. A mentor is a valuable component of a families’ success that help to guide them through the process every step of the way.
Mentors will receive training and guidance on how to help their family succeed as well as be a part of the ultimate outcome of their mentoring; homeownership for a deserving family. We encourage you to be a part of our Habitat family and call us for more information at 382-2215.

Taijiquan (T’ai Chi Chuan) is an ancient Chinese mind/body discipline, considered for centuries to be a cultural treasure of China. It provides a structure through which we can express our innermost feelings, beliefs, and ideas, and cultivate Chi: the vital force. It is also a means to critique that structure and, when necessary, to refine it.
Taijiquan begins with a study of the body, for through the body we can understand the mind. It is often called “moving meditation”, but it is a martial art based upon a profound body of principles, theories and techniques. It promotes healthy circulation, bone building, and balance, often helping to reverse dis-eases like osteoporosis, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Dancing Heron Taijiquan is pleased to offer free taiji to new WRC members. New members will be entered into a drawing and a name will be drawn each quarter!

Julie Gentry, MA, CBP, LMT is pleased to announce the opening of her new BodyTalk practice at the Asante Center for Empowered Healing, 801 Florida Rd., Ste. 11, Durango.
BodyTalk stimulates the body's innate ability to balance and heal itself on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. BodyTalk's major assets are its simplicity, safety and the speed of its results. It is gentle, relaxing, non-invasive, objective in application...and fun
BodyTalk is an astonishingly simple and effective form of therapy that allows the body's energy systems to be re-synchronized so they can operate as nature intended. Each system, cell and atom is in constant communication with each other at all times. Through exposure to the stresses of day-to-day life, however, these lines of communication can become compromised, which then leads to a decline in physical, emotional and/or mental well-being. Reconnecting these lines of communication enables the body's mechanisms to function at optimal levels, thus preventing disease and rapidly accelerating the healing process.
For more information go to www.bodytalksystem.com or www.asantecenter.com. To make an appointment, contact Julie Gentry at julierob915@hotmail.com, 970.385.5485 or 512.296.9293 cell.
