WRC Gala Brings Venice to Durango

Stylish masks kept attendees' identities
a secret.

On September 11, 2004, more than 120 revelers wearing glittered and feathered masks, elaborate costumes or just their Sunday best showed up to support the Women's Resource Center at its annual fundraising gala, Carnivale in Venice.

The ballroom at the Durango Community Recreation Center was transformed with stark black and silver wall drapes, hanging masks and feathers, and a 20-foot mural of a gondolier on the canals of Venice at midnight. The mural served as perfect backdrop for the complimentary portraits of attendees arranged by First National Bank of Durango.

The scrumptious food for the evening was supplied by 1887 Catering, Cyprus Café, The Ore House and Road Runner Catering. The variety of silent and live auctions offered something for everyone, from an ATV to a massage-a-month package to a truckload of gravel. The event grossed $25,000 for WRC programs and services.

WRC member and artist Barbara Edidin brought a little bit of Venice to Durango by painting this 20-foot backdrop.

Artist Linda Greenberg helped promote the event by painting several windows around Durango.
